Blackstone Valley Youth Leadership Academy
The Youth Leadership Academy is a unique program of the Blackstone Valley Education Foundation and seeks to develop the leadership skills of young people and strengthen their connection to the Blackstone Valley. The academy offers students a challenging curriculum over the course of 6 months. Students participate in 12 sessions covering a range of topics including team building, community needs analysis, goal setting, project planning, decision making, civic engagement, and other leadership dynamics. Students also participate in a mock town meeting where they assume various town meeting roles and act on a warrant under the guidance of a former town moderator. The program begins in late fall and culminates with a community service project created and implemented by each student in April as well as a May graduation ceremony. Each session is held in a different community where bits of history are shared, strengthening their connection to the Blackstone Valley. Class of 2012 is now underway!
The Blackstone Valley Education Foundation’s Youth Leadership Academy welcomed 19 freshman/sophomores from our member high schools into the new BVYLA class for this year on Saturday, Nov. 5th at River Bend Farm in Uxbridge. Students were engaged in icebreakers, team building activities and a brief insight into what to expect throughout the year. Participants will complete nearly 35 hours of direct contact and many more hours of their own practicing leadership skills and qualities while they create, manage and implement a community service project come May. Every session is held at a different community location throughout the valley so students are exposed and learn the heritage of their neighboring towns. During this journey, students will meet and be mentored by community leaders, learn critical project management and presentation skills, decision making, problem solving as well as critical thinking skills. A May graduation and presentation of individual projects wraps up the year as we celebrate and recognize our new community leaders.
The BVYLA program is an opportunity to forge new relationships and to experience accountability outside of the classroom, which can build self-esteem, self-awareness, and self-confidence amount those who have not yet experienced those milestones. If you are interested in participating in this unique experience, please contact Julie Salmon at jsalmon@blackstonevalley.org.
