Schedule for class of 2006/2007
Sessions are held on the 2nd Thursday of the month from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm unless otherwise noted.

Thursday, October 19th - Opening retreat
The entering class will enjoy a breakfast sponsored by the Leadership Blackstone Valley Alumni Association. The retreat is an opportunity for the participants to get to know each other and be introduced to the leadership institute. The session is a combination of self-assessment, team building and making new connections.

Tuesday, November 16th - Sustaining the Vision of the National Heritage Corridor
In 1986, Congress designated the Blackstone River Valley a National Heritage Corridor. In doing so they told the world that this is a special place, one that should be preserved. Participants will tour sites and meet local and state leaders who are active in realizing the goals of this National Heritage Corridor.

Thursday, December 14th - The Citizen Planner and Economic Development
Using a case study model, participants will learn from the people involved in economic development projects around the Valley how they have balanced the demands of economic growth with the interest of preserving the character of their community. During this session participants will tour several sites in the Valley.

Thursday, January 11th - Conflict, Collaboration, and Consensus: Exploring Skills for Community Leadership
This session is dedicated to skill development. Specifically a leader's ability to resolve conflict, facilitate collaboration and build consensus. For this important topic we invite someone to work with the class whose professional focus is in this field.

Thursday, February 8th - Transportation - a Driving Force of Growth in the Blackstone Valley
Whether it is by water, rail, highway or bikeway, transportation has determined the growth rate of the Blackstone Valley. Participants will learn how transportation has influenced industrial and residential development. They will meet state and local officials who are responsible for meeting the future transportation challenges.

Thursday, March 8th - The Changing Face of the Blackstone Valley
The region has always benefited from the hard work and cultural contributions of new immigrants. During this session we talk about the people who live and work in the Valley. We look at what we can do as leaders to become more culturally competent and support our communities to make the best use of all of our resources.

Thursday, April 12th - Preserving the Natural Resources of the Valley
The morning's focus will be on water - the quality of our drinking water and the strategy to make the Blackstone River smimmable and fishable by 2015. In the afternoon, we will look at land trusts and other tools to preserve valuable open space.

Thursday, May 10th - The Tourism Industry
Tourism weaves historic, cultural, natural, recreational, agricultural and scenic resources as well as commercial enterprises into distinctive destination places that offer attractive, authentic experiences that appeal to the discerning visitor and enrich the lives of local residents. Experience the Valley as a tourist might while discussing the economic impact tourism-related business have on the overall region. Learn how private/public partnerships strengthen the vision and voice of the Valley.

Thursday, May May 24th - Community Stewardship and Graduation
This session will provide the inspiration to continue beyond the leadership institute. The visioning projects are presented and discussed, the participants meet with representatives of the Alumni Association and families, friends and community supporters gather to congratulate the class as they graduate.
